Attendance Matters - Guidance for Parents
At Hernhill CE Primary School, we believe that every school day counts. Good attendance and punctuality help children to thrive — not just academically, but socially and emotionally too. When children are in school, they’re learning, connecting with friends, and building the confidence and skills they need for the future.
We know that sometimes life throws challenges our way, and we’re here to help. Our approach is rooted in partnership - working closely with families to understand and overcome any barriers to attendance.
Our Commitment
At Hernhill, we:
-
Regularly monitor attendance and punctuality, celebrating improvement and offering support where needed.
 -
Work alongside families to identify and resolve any issues that might make regular attendance difficult.
 -
Aim high — we want every child to achieve 100% attendance, knowing this gives them the very best chance to succeed.
 -
Communicate clearly so that parents understand their vital role in supporting their child’s attendance.
 -
Treat every child as an individual, responding with understanding, care, and consistency.

Why Attendance Matters
There are 190 school days each year — and every one of them is an opportunity to learn and grow. Absences, even short ones, can quickly add up and make it harder for children to keep up with their learning.
We ask parents to plan family events, holidays, and appointments outside of term time
Our term dates are published well in advance to help you plan ahead.
Holidays in Term Time
By law, schools can only authorise term-time absences in exceptional circumstances.
Family holidays, birthday treats, and leisure trips during term time will not normally be approved.
Exceptional circumstances are rare and might include:
-
A close family wedding or significant religious celebration (for one day only)
 -
A serious illness or bereavement within the immediate family
 -
A unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the child (for example, performing in a national event or competition)
 -
Service personnel leave following an overseas posting

Decisions are made in line with our Attendance Policy and Kent County Council guidance.
If parents or carers have an attendance request, they should email or write to the deputy headteacher,
Julia Woodcock.

Working Together
We know that children achieve their best when home and school work hand in hand.
If you’re finding it difficult to get your child into school, or there’s something affecting their attendance, please speak to us - early conversations often make all the difference.
